Defra’s most recent Farm Rents report covers March 2019 to February 2020, using results from the 2019-20 Farm Business Survey. Despite this 4% swing, the average rent/acre remains higher for FBTs than FATs – also known as Agricultural Holdings Act (AHA) tenancies. FAT agreements Agricultural tenancies agreed before 1 September 1995 are known as FATs or AHAs. They usually have lifetime security of tenure and many also carry statutory succession rights.

Scrutiny demanded as councils continue to sell farms estate >More in © Tim Scrivener Farm groups have spoken of their disappointment and desire for further scrutiny into local authorities’ actions as the latest data shows the national county farms estate remains under threat. The 70th Annual Report to Parliament on Local Authority Smallholdings in England (1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020) includes data from 40 authorities that responded to the Chartered Institute for Public Finance and Accountancy (Cipfa) survey – 43 were approached. However, in some cases, these submitted data sets were incomplete, making it difficult to draw a direct comparison with previous years, which Tenant Farmers Association chief executive George Dunn said Defra needed to address.

Farm advisers lobby for extension of super-deduction >More in © Tim Scrivener The 130% first-year capital allowance for companies announced in the Budget should be extended to all businesses, say farm advice groups. The “super-deduction” for plant and machinery will run for two years from April 2021 and is only available to companies, in part to make up for a rise in corporation tax from April 2023. It is estimated that only 10-15% of farms involve a company in any form, and a joint lobbying initiative from the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers, Tenant Farmers Association (TFA), National Farmers Union and Country Land and Business Association is calling for the allowance to be extended to partnerships and sole traders.
