George Liddle Sr who put bass fishing into Chicago has died and brings memories

Provided by George Liddle Jr. I often wondered what made George Liddle Sr. decide to bass fish on the Cal Sag. “When you’re ate up with bass fishing,, when there is a pond, you’re going to fish it,” said his son George Jr. driving back Sunday to Arkansas. “In the early ‘80s, we went out there a couple times and, ‘What the heck? There are fish here.’ “Early on, it was small baits, single spins, small crankbaits, doing anything to get a bite. Those baits still work well.” Near the Y on the Calumet, they got up to 40 bass a day sometimes.

He was born Feb. 7, 1983, in Youngstown. Mark started working for Independent Cab and then became a cook for Belleria in Boardman. He loved fishing, taking walks at the lily pond, shooting pool, bowling, car shows, camping, cookouts or just sitting at home playing cards or board games. Mark was a member of the Army and Navy Club and the Casa Loma Club. He knew how to make time for family. He was always around family and friends. Mark always tried to make everyone happy. Mark always enjoyed spending time with the ones he loved, especially his fiancee, Gina Gender; stepchildren, Gabby, Eric and Gracie “Gravy” Blankenship; sister, Jenifer (George) Thomas of Campbell and their children, George Jr., Tyler, Brooke, Cayden and Logan; an aunt, Debbie (Thomas) Mickler of Canfield; an uncle, Dale (Kathy) Haag of Youngstown; his best buddy of 18 years, his dog, Princess; and numerous cousins and friends.

Apr 10, 2021 Richard L. Hessert, 87, of Rumson, New Jersey, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on the morning of March 30, 2021 after a lengthy battle with dementia and later, COVID. Dick was born in DuBoistown on September 29, 1933 to father George L. Hessert Sr. and mother Elizabeth (Denius) Hessert-Heilman. The youngest of three sons, Dick graduated from South Williamsport High School, where he played all-state football. He was drafted into the U.S. Army after graduation and was stationed in Berlin, Germany during the Korean War as a combat engineer. His job was to wire bridges between East and West Berlin with explosives to curtail the Soviets. Upon exiting the military, Dick attended Lycoming College, graduating with a degree in mathematics. Soon after, Dick was hired at Geisinger Medical Center to set up one of the first dialysis labs in the country.
