Minnesota factory workers feel aftermath of asbestos 36 years later

Minnesota factory workers feel aftermath of asbestos 36 years later For over a decade, workers at the Conwed factory in Cloquet, Minn., claim they unknowingly risked their health, causing some to develop lung abnormalities, while others lost their lives. Conwed, formerly known as the Wood Conversion Co., used asbestos in the production of its Lo-Tone mineral board and ceiling tile products, potentially exposing about 6,000 workers to the hazardous ingredient. Community leaders laud Marathon airport as economic boon

Private jets consistently took off and landed as about 30 people rendezvoused Feb. 5 at a Marathon International Airport hanger. Monroe County and Marathon leaders discussed how general aviation stakeholders facilitate the success of the community and how rural airports serve as a runway for economic development, job recovery and emergency response. Marathon International Airport’s new Jet Center opened in July 20, and owner Marty Hiller was widely praised by those in attendance for his vision and success with Marathon airport operations. ”We look at our responsibility as the gateway to your community,” Hiller said, noting its primary job is safety. “We are the first and the last ones people see when [pilots and passengers] arrive and depart Marathon.” He said while 2020 numbers were flat, this year’s business is at 95% of previous years.

Marathon council endorses options for code enforcement

The Marathon City Council agreed to create a hybrid model for code enforcement and continued the trash receptacle ordinance to next month, while approving the Coco Plum bridge projects and the kayak ramp on Grassy Key to move forward this month. Rotary Park will receive a facelift as well. The council agreed to a hybrid model for code enforcement in which residents have the option to choose between a code board made up of their neighbors and friends or an impartial, law school-trained special magistrate. The vote was split, with John Bartus, Mayor Luis Gonzalez and Dan Zieg in favor of the hybrid model. Zieg said 80% to 90% of cases are resolved before ever coming to the magistrate. Bartus said the city’s incorporation movement two decades ago had a code board comprised of citizens among its most desired goals, and a hybrid system is the “best of both worlds.”
