Honors Program to become Morehead Honors College

A $10 million fundraising campaign, led by the UGA Foundation and its emeriti trustees to strengthen the University of Georgia’s Honors Program, will culminate in the naming of the Jere W. Morehead Honors College. Morehead serves as president of the University of Georgia, and the naming was approved by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents in a meeting on Tuesday, May 11.
“My fellow board members and I are delighted to play a role in this transformation at the University of Georgia,” said Sachin Shailendra, chair of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. “And my very good friend, Jere Morehead, has always remained dedicated to students and the state of Georgia. There is no one more deserving of this honor.”

He asked several prominent East Cobb citizens to serve on an advisory board to examine a financial feasibility study. When one of them asked who else was involved in the Cityhood effort, Gavalis declined to reveal them and that individual quit, citing a lack of transparency.
In its release on Friday, the Citybood group included a photo of Gavalis receiving an award from State Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick of East Cobb upon being named the “Distinguished Older Georgian 2021” by the legislature.

read our Q and A with him here) and to be taken up in 2022 needs a local sponsor in the State Senate. Kirkpatrick, who represents the proposed East Cobb city, did not co-sponsor the initial bill, saying she received plenty of negative feedback.
Clarence Dean Alford, a former member of the University System of Georgia Board of Regents, was indicted on Tuesday on various allegations, including running a Ponzi scheme that deceived investors out of millions.
According to the press release, the Office of the Georgia Attorney General announced that the prosecution charged Alford with one count of racketeering, one count of criminal attempt, one count of computer forgery and five counts of forgery in the second degree
Before serving on the Board of Regents, Alford was a part of the Georgia State Legislature for 10 years. Alford stepped down from his position with the Board of Regents in October 2019 after joining the board in 2012. He resigned from his duties after law enforcement started an investigation regarding the allegations.
