The announcement, made by Gov. Brian Kemp at a gathering in Columbus, Ga., included news that a GRA Eminent Scholar chair would be created at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM), Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) – and named for state Rep. Calvin Smyre of Columbus, currently the longest-serving member of the Georgia General Assembly. 

Interfor to invest $30 million in Georgia sawmill expansion

Print ATLANTA, Ga. – Interfor will invest $30 million to expand its sawmill operations in Perry, Georgia, according to an announcement by Gov. Brian Kemp and the Georgia Department of Economic Development. The expansion will increase both lumber production and log consumption at the large forest products company’s mill in Perry. Headquartered in Burnaby, British Columbia, Interfor operates 17 sawmills across the United States and Canada, along with a coastal woodlands logging business in British Columbia.  It has an annual production capacity of approximately 3.2 billion board feet. Interfor currently employs more than 1,200 Georgians and operates seven sawmills across the state. “We are excited to further invest in the Perry team and community. The leisure and hospitality sector lost 223,000 jobs statewide between February and April 2020. In Atlanta, hotel occupancy plummeted from 74% in February of last year to just 9% in April. “We’re a convention city,” said William Pate, president and CEO of the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau. “All of a sudden, the conventions canceled.” “We lost half of March, all of April and most of May,” added Joe Marinelli, president of Visit Savannah, that city’s tourism promotion agency. “Losing those months was hard on us.”
