Australiaâs embassy in Tokyo prepared for an apocalyptic scenario during the Fukushima nuclear disaster that would result in staff fleeing to an underground car park fallout shelter.
The shelter on level B2 at the embassy was to be stocked with water and food, and act as a buffer in case a massive explosion further devastated reactors already damaged in Japanâs 2011 earthquake and tsunami disasters.

The fallout shelter plan was not broadcast publicly because the facility could cater for only 200-plus people. The embassy planned to accept any Australians who turned up but would not have been able to cope if thousands arrived.
