Bird Scooters are coming to Pueblo West, and the Pueblo West Metro District discussed what that could mean for the community in its meeting Monday night.
According to its website, Bird is a company which seeks to create a more livable future by reducing car trips, traffic and carbon emissions.
The company was founded in 2017 and saw over 10 million rides within its first year. Since 2017, Bird has expanded and is now in 150 cities globally.
Users download the Bird app on their phone, sign a user agreement verifying their age, add a payment method and from there are able to find Bird scooters on a map within the app.
In the fourth Pueblo West Metro District board meeting of the year, the board voted unanimously on three important action items that will benefit the community.
Pueblo West Fire Chief Brian Caserta asked the board to repurpose an allocated amount of $90,000 designated for design work for Fire Station 2 to be used in conjunction with the rollover amount of $133,244 for a combined amount of $223,244 for upgrades to the living quarters at Fire Station 1.
Caserta added that small improvements have been made, but none that capture the true intent of what needs to be done at the fire station.
“What we ended up doing was turning a space that was one big open room that was a storage room for fire hose and things like that and converted it into a bedroom living space for the first three fulltime firefighters that we had living at the station for 24 hours at a time,” Caserta said.
In its second meeting of 2021, the Pueblo West Metro District Board unanimously decided to move forward for a design build of an aquatic center, approved the sale of 24 single family home lots and more.
Director of Parks and Recreation Carol Cosby addressed the board Monday as a part of the Aquatic Center Committee asking for board direction.
The district developed the Aquatic Center Committee in 2019, and is comprised of a metro board member, two community members, one county commissioner and three Pueblo West Metro District employees.
Cosby said the committee was able to meet four times over the course of 2020.
