LankaWeb – Sri Lanka extends island-wide travel restrictions until June 07

According to Minister Johnston Fernando, three days will be allocated during the extended travel restriction for the public to purchase essential goods. Travel restrictions extended till 07th June. Restrictions will be relaxed on 25th May, 31st May, and 04th June to buy essential items. Vehicles will be not allowed to travel when the restrictions are relaxed” Minister Johnston Fernando said. Only one person can travel to the nearest shop from one house. Only food and medicine shops will be allowed to open” he added.

Text and Pix By Dinasena Ratugamage Ongoing lockdowns have dealt the pumpkin and ash pumpkin farmers in Kilinochchi a crippling blow; they are unable to sell their produce, says President of the Pooneryn Farmers’ Association S Arluananthan. Stocks of pumpkin and ash pumpkin had been lying in sheds for over three weeks, but traders could not come to the fields to collect them, Arluananthan said. Although the farmers of Kilinochchi take their produce to Special Economic Zones in Dambulla and Thambuttegama a large number of their colleagues sell their produce to the traders coming from other areas, according to Arulananthan.  The farmers were in a desperate situation as they could not sell a kilo of pumpkin or ash pumpkin even at Rs. 10 a kilo, the President of the Pooneryn Farmers’ Association said.

Three persons arrested over death of Puttalam UC Head

by Norman Palihawadane Three persons have been arrested in connection with the death of Puttalam Urban Council Chairman Abdul Baiz, Police Spokesman, DIG Ajith Rohana said yesterday. The DIG said that 52-year-old Baiz and three others had gone for a bath in the Ralmaduwa Tank and were on their way to Eluwankulama when they met with an accident. Witnesses had said the UC Chairman who was travelling in the back of an open truck had got thrown out of the vehicle and sustained serious injuries. He was admitted to the Puttalam Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries in the evening. 

Travel restrictions extended until 07 June as repeatedly demanded by experts

The ongoing travel restrictions have been extended till June 7, according to Chief Government Whip and Highways Minister Johnston Fernando. Addressing the media at the Department of Government Information, Colombo, he said the government had taken that decision in keeping with expert advice to contain the spread of the pandemic. When restrictions are temporarily lifted today only one person per family could leave home to purchase essential items. The restrictions would also be relaxed on May 31 and June 4 for the public to purchase essential items. The Minister said that vehicular movements would also continue to be restricted even when restrictions are eased temporarily.
