(NEW YORK) Police say a good Samaritan who jumped off a Maryland bridge to save a young child wants to remain anonymous despite being a hero.
The incident began with a 5-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon on the Route 90 bridge across Assawoman Bay near Ocean City, Maryland.
A 2-year-old child was ejected from a pickup truck with her car seat, landing in the bay below, the Ocean City Police Department said in a statement provided to ABC News.
As the truck the child was in dangled over the guardrail, the good Samaritan jumped over the the edge and into the water to save the toddler.

Eight people including an infant were hospitalized Sunday afternoon after a two-vehicle crash that was followed by a dramatic rescue of the infant. CBS Baltimore reports that police and fire units were dispatched to the Route 90 bridge in Ocean City.
One vehicle was dangling half over a guardrail. A mass casualty incident was declared.
Officials said the infant was ejected from the vehicle teetering over the guardrail and landed into the Assawoman Bay.
A Good Samaritan immediately jumped over the guardrail into the bay and rescued the infant, authorities said.
Firefighters secured the vehicle while paramedics tended to the injured.

A car was left dangling over the guardrails of a bridge in the crash where a toddler fell in water.
A man in Ocean City, Maryland, is being hailed a hero for jumping into water to save a toddler. The 23-month-old girl fell out of a car and into the bay on Sunday after an accident that left the vehicle dangling off the guardrails of a bridge. Several other people were injured in the crash, the Ocean City Fire Department said in a statement released on social media.

An infant ejected from a vehicle Sunday after a crash in Ocean City was flown to a Baltimore hospital and seven others were also injured, according to the Ocean City Fire Department.
Officials said emergency crews were called at 2:47 p.m. to the Maryland Route 90 bridge for a crash involving a vehicle that was half over the guardrail.
Investigators initially declared a mass casualty incident before upgrading it to a rescue response.
