The nation’s largest private employer is expanding educational opportunities for employees. On Tuesday, Walmart announced it will pay 100% of college tuition and books through its Live Better U program.
Walmart and Sam’s Club employees previously paid a dollar a day to take part in the program. Walmart said it plans to invest nearly a billion dollars over the next five years in career training and development.
In a news release, Lorraine Stomski, senior vice president of learning and leadership, said the expansion includes additional college degree and certification options in business administration, supply chain and cybersecurity.

Walmart announced that it will be investing nearly $1 billion to cover the full cost of college tuition and books for its employees. The retailer began offering free tuition through its Live Better U education program in 2018 but charged employees $1 per day.

Walmart’s part-time and full-time Walmart and Sam’s Club workers who are based in the U.S. can say farewell to student loan debt, according to a press release.
All college tuition and books expenses will be covered for Walmart’s Live Better U (LBU) education program participants. Aug. 16 marks the big day that the perk will begin for associates. The current daily $1 fee will end for those who utilize LBU, to encourage a greater number of them to embark upon educational goals, according to Walmart’s announcement.

Walmart announced on Tuesday that it will “pay 100% of college tuition and books” for its employees seeking additional education through the company’s Live Better U (LBU) program. The company states that 1.5 million employees will be able to earn college degrees or learn trade skills at zero cost to themselves. Previously, the LBU program was offered at low costs but Walmart workers still shoulders part of the education costs themselves.
Walmart says it is committed to “eliminating the burden of education debt” by investing “nearly $1 billion over the next five years in career-driven training and development.”
The company added that starting on August 16, it will eliminate the $1 daily fee that employees have been paying for the education program, “making all education programs paid for by Walmart.” The company also previously offered discounts on college textbooks, but now says it will cover their cost completely.
