Crawford County could be home to a state-operated veterans cemetery.
A group making that push, a retired national guardsmen and a state senator met Monday to honor fallen heroes.
The cemetery on Johnson Hill in Grayling may be the smallest military cemetery in the U.S.
The community is also home to Camp Grayling, which has hosted military trainings for more than 100 years.
A retired guardsman that was assigned to Camp Grayling is helping to lead an effort to bring a more appropriately sized final resting place to Northern Michigan.
“One of the benefits they tell veterans is that they can get buried for little to no cost at a veterans cemetery,” said Wayne Koppa, retired Guardsman assigned to Camp Grayling. “By not constructing them in Northern Michigan we have taken that benefit away from all of our people. When we called on them to do what the military asked them to do, they went and did it. We should be there for them.”
