Whatâs a Little Free Library?
A Little Free Library is a free book-sharing box where anyone may take a book or share a book. It functions on the honor system. You do not need to share a book in order to take one, but of course, all books placed in the box are appreciated.
Who can use it?
The little library is open for both children and adults to enjoy. Carol Dubay, chairman of the Johnson City Monday Clubâs Arts and Culture Committee, said, âMy hope is that children and adults will take advantage of this library by not only taking books for their reading pleasure but also by bringing books to lend to the library. I love to read and feel like everyone should have access to books, especially children. Iâve heard Rebecca Henderson, a fellow club member, say many times that a child that loves to read will be a successful adult.â

What: Summer Reading is an annual nationwide program in which participants register and set reading goals for themselves. Then they spend the summer tracking their progress, winning prizes and attending events.
The program is divided into age divisions: preschoolers, school-age children, teens and adults. This yearâs Summer Reading theme is âTails to Tales,â so reading challenges and events for all the age divisions focus on animal-themed topics. Events range from programs with Bays Mountain to a pet adoption with the Humane Society of Washington County.
When: Johnson City Public Libraryâs Summer Reading Program begins June 1 and runs through July 23.
Fifteen bronze animal sculptures have been installed in locations throughout downtown Johnson City.
Art students in the East Tennessee State University Department of Art & Design designed and fabricated the sculptures under the direction of professor Travis Graves, according to a release from the city.
Connect Downtown Johnson City and the Johnson City Public Art Committee coordinated the project, and a group of educators and a librarian from the Johnson City Public Library created a scavenger hunt called âWildabout Walkaboutâ by developing clues for the location of each sculpture.
Scavenger hunt clue cards are available at various downtown businesses and through curbside pickup at the Johnson City Public Library. The clues can also be accessed on the Downtown Johnson City website at www.downtownjc.com/wildabout.

A permanent fixture of Johnson Cityâs sesquicentennial celebration is nearing completion.
Public Works Director Phil Pindzola expects construction on the history circle in King Commons Park, which is part of the larger legacy project, will likely wrap up next week.
The project was concealed under a tent on Thursday, where crews were installing the elements that will ultimately make up the circle.
Once complete, the history circle will consist of a series of concentric rings featuring blocks engraved with key dates and information about Johnson Cityâs history. A trio of tall passion flowers with bright filaments currently sit in the center of the circle.
