Just how friendly was made clear when I sat last week to talk with the non-profit shelter’s vegan founders Shawn and Jered Camp at an outdoor picnic table on the 40-acre site. Two of their critters immediately sauntered up to greet me.
A large red Angus calf they call Augie licked my elbow with his massive tongue and nibbled gently on my sweatshirt as I took notes.
“He’s a space invader,” warned Shawn, grinning.
They explained that Augie arrived at their shelter from Kansas at two weeks old, born with a rare condition called hypotrichosis that left him without hair or teeth. He looks healthy now, but still needs a special soft diet and weather protection.
One person was injured in a two-vehicle incident Friday north of Kalona.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, shortly before noon, 87-year-old Gary Cameron of Fairfield was driving a Lincoln Town Car south on Highway 1. Cameron then attempted to turn left onto 540th Street near the Kalona Creamery when he collided with a Dodge Ram pickup driven by 43-year-old Jerry Loxtercamp of Villard, Minnesota. Cameron suffered minor injuries and was transported by Johnson County Ambulance to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was also cited for failure to yield on a left turn. Both vehicles were totaled.
