NEW YORK Ben Cherington s first amateur draft as general manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates was brief and remote, held amid the coronavirus pandemic that grounded scouts and wiped out nearly all of 2020 s amateur baseball calendar.
With the Bucs facing the pressure of the No. 1 overall pick this year, he s grateful to have his scouts back in the draft room, battling contentiously over their big board like old times.

Modano ties Smoltz with closing albatross at Edgewood Tahoe
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Nev. (AP) Hall of Fame hockey player Mike Modano holed out from 205 yards on the par-5 18th Friday for the first albatross in American Century Championship history and a share of the first-round lead with John Smoltz.
“I can’t believe it! I can’t believe it!” Modano said “My eyesight is shot at 51. So I’m, like, `I can’t see things halfway off the club.′ (Playing partner T.J. Oshie) went crazy. And some people over by the side went nuts. I was like, man, `That may have went in.′ So, pretty cool.”

STATELINE, Nev. The first day of the American Century Championship came to a close with baseball great John Smoltz and Hall of Fame hockey player Mike Modano tied for the lead with 25 points.
Smoltz was paired with Joe Buck and Joe Mauer, a group he said was a lot of fun to play with.
Last year, Smoltz had the most pars, something he wasn’t proud of. This year, he turned it around by bagging five birdies in the first round. If Smoltz wins, he’d be the oldest champion.

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Most golfers will never have one, and its never happened during the 32-year history of the American Century Championship. NHL Hall of Famer Mike Modano pulled off the almost impossible albatross - three below par on the par 5 18th hold at Edgewood Tahoe on Friday.
Modano, who spent most of his career with the Minnesota North Stars and the Dallas Stars, holed out a 205 yard 7-iron on the 501-yard 18th hole for an albatross. It earned 10 points in the Modified Stableford scoring format to vault Modano into a tie for the lead at 25 points with MLB Hall of Famer John Smoltz.
