Local elections 2021: Former Poole mayor wins Canford Heath by-election

Conservative Sean Gabriel (right) with Liberal Democrat Jennie Hodges at Friday s Canford Heath by-election count A FORMER mayor of Poole has been elected to the vacant Canford Heath seat on BCP Council. Conservative Sean Gabriel won by 41 votes over Liberal Democrat Jennie Hodges who had been hoping to win the seat which had been held by fellow party member Pete Parrish until his death last year. Cllr Gabriel, who finished fourth in the election for the three-seat ward in 2019, overturned the 642-vote gap to take the seat. Speaking at Friday s count, he said his election was a massive honour and that he was looking forward to being a councillor again.

Countin will take place the following day. Six candidates have been put forward to fill the vacancy left following the death of Liberal Democrat Pete Parrish last year. They are: John Sheldon – Independent A former councillor who spent 30 years working with the police before moving to Canford Heath to support a relative, John Sheldon said he is an experienced candidate. He said it was important council tax-payers’ money was spent “wisely” and that he would “look for best practise” to ensure this. Among his priorities are being “readily contactable” by residents, working closely with Dorset Police to resolve any issues of crime and anti-social behaviour and securing a “fair share” of funding for the ward.

Prisoner wrongfully convicted of rape is said to be dying of cancer in a Virginia prison

Family asks for compassion release for Calvin Wayne Cunningham A man whose life spiraled out of control after he was wrongfully convicted of a 1979 rape in Newport News is said to be dying behind bars from cancer. Jon Sheldon, a lawyer for Calvin Wayne Cunningham, an inmate at the Lunenburg Correctional Center, said Friday that, Calvin got his diagnosis yesterday: stage four liver and pancreatic cancer. He is in tremendous pain and by his condition it appears that he has a very short time, said Sheldon. Sheldon filed a petition for an emergency compassionate release for Cunningham with the Virginia State Parole Board Friday in the hope his client will not die in prison. The governor s office and the Virginia Department of Corrections were copied on the petition.
