Ransomware cartel never reached potential, but future efforts may succeed

FBI’s cyber division personnel in front of a computer screen. In late 2020 and 2021 law enforcement scored a series of victories against cybercriminal actors, shutting down certain operations, seizing assets and/or making arrests related to Egregor ransomware, NetWalker RaaS and the Emotet botnet. (FBI) Counter to initial fears, researchers say the ransomware cartel formed by the Maze cybergang starting in May 2020 never hit its stride. Indeed, experts who spoke with SC Media said they doubt enough incentive currently exists for competing threat actors to overcome the inherent challenges in working collaboratively and developing a revenue-sharing model. If they ever were able to form an effective alliance, however, the resulting cooperative could present a significant danger to victims as they evolve their skills and weapons.

Interactive hacks went up 400% in the past two years

George Kurtz, CEO of CrowdStrike, speaks at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference in 2017. CrowdStrike released it’s Global Threat Report, which shows the old-fashioned way of hacking – with hands on keyboards – isn’t going out of style anytime soon. (Fortune Brainstorm Tech) The cybersecurity industry is often rife with hype around the topic of automation, with both IT security teams and malicious hacking groups steadily incorporating more tools and processes that can rapidly and automatically scan networks or process large datasets at speeds far faster than humans. However, according to CrowdStrike’s new Global Threat Report, the old-fashioned way of hacking – with hands on keyboards – isn’t going out of style anytime soon. The company’s OverWatch platform has observed a fourfold increase in interactive intrusions over the past two years, with nearly half of that increase driven by an explosion in e-crime

Emotet 101: How the Ransomware Works -- and Why

What Is Emotet? Emotet is a Trojan available through a malware-as-a-service (MaaS) model. This means cybercriminals can download a package, often for a few hundred dollars or a monthly subscription fee, and direct attacks to businesses and individuals. The initial payload which is typically delivered via e-mail, infected documents, or websites unleashes a script, macro, or code that operates as a worm that infects various software applications and systems, such as an Outlook address book or a cloud-based container. In many cases, Emotet often sits idle for 30 to 45 days before it launches a ransomware attack, notes Keith Mularski, managing director in the cybersecurity practice at consulting firm EY.
