In the British West Indies much of the early capital to finance White slavery came from Sephardic Jews from Holland. They provided credit, machinery and shipping facilities. In the 1630s Dutch Jews had been deeply involved in the enslavement of the Irish, financing their transport to slave plantations in the tropics. By the 1660s, this combination of Jewish finance and White slave labor made the British island colony of Barbados the richest in the empire. Across America, it’s becoming increasingly common for school districts to advance alternative versions of American history that focus almost exclusively on the nation’s faults rather than its exceptionalism. Even elite preparatory academies like Manhattan’s Brearley and Dalton schools are instituting “critical race theory” curricula that define people by race rather than character.
At the same time, schools have forgone the study of great authors like Homer, Horace, Dante Alighieri, and Fyodor Dostoyevsky luminaries whose ideas transcend race, sex, gender identity, religion, and ethnicity. 13 seniors named Winthrop Scholars; 40 inducted into Phi Beta Kappa
Continuing a tradition that dates back nearly 100 years, Connecticut College has named 13 seniors as Winthrop Scholars, the highest academic honor bestowed by the College. An additional 27 students were also selected for initiation into Phi Beta Kappa, the national honor society of undergraduate higher education.
The Connecticut College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Delta of Connecticut, was established in 1935. Membership is restricted to students in their senior year. There are two elections annually, both in the senior year. Students elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa earlier in their senior year are designated Winthrop Scholars, a distinction instituted by the faculty in 1928 as a means of recognizing the highest level of scholarship and academic promise. On a Tuesday evening in March, veterans of America’s war in Afghanistan are sitting at an outdoor patio bar in Washington, DC. The presence on the menu of steak tartare, lobster ceviche and truffled chips is the only clue that this is a rarefied hotel in Georgetown, one of the capital’s most expensive neighbourhoods. The atmosphere otherwise is a fug of “fucks” and spent hopes.
One of the vets says he was shot in the hamstring (“the ass”, his friends correct him with glee). Another lost his leg to an improvised explosive device in Kandahar in 2012. He recovered in the nearby Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
