By Cllr David Baines, leader of St Helens Borough Council Column L-R: Cllr Richard McCauley, John Riley, mayor Cllr Paul PcQuade, Cllr Nova Charlton, council leader David Baines and Cllr Andy Bowden EVERY year on April 28, the UK joins countries around the world in marking International Workers’ Memorial Day, paying tribute to those who have lost their lives at work or from work-related injury and disease, and reaffirming our commitment to fight for better standards of health and safety for the benefit of everyone. In a borough like St Helens, which has been built on the back of hard labour and heavy industries like glass and coal, we’ve sadly got a legacy of tragedies large and small and it’s vital we remember them and do all we can to stand up for the rights and welfare of working people everywhere.

St Helens commemorates International Workers Memorial Day

RESIDENTS are asked to remember those that lost their lives in the workplace today on International Workers’ Memorial Day. Held annually on April 28, International Workers Memorial Day is a time to remember workers killed, disabled, injured, or made unwell by their work and promote campaigns in the fight for health and safety improvements to prevent further tragedies from happening. In St Helens, a small memorial event - in line with coronavirus restrictions - was held at the Workers’ Memorial statue in Vera Page Park where dignitaries, including the Mayor of St Helens, laid wreaths. Unveiled in 2019, the statue is made from old tools and depicts an industrial worker holding aloft a child.

Intersections with the most crashes in Chippewa County The Sault News CHIPPEWA COUNTY Local law enforcement agencies are urging residents to avoid traffic crashes on all roadways as Distracted Driving Awareness Month draws to a close.  According to Michigan Traffic Crash Facts, over the course of 2015 to 2019, the Upper Peninsula had a total of nearly 44,000 crashes. Chippewa County placed in third place with the most crashes in the Upper Peninsula in that time frame with 4,600 total crashes.  “It is imperative that drivers pay attention and avoid distractions while operating a vehicle,” said Sergeant Ben Eckola with the Michigan State Police. “Any activity that takes your eyes off the road or your hands off the steering wheel is potentially dangerous to both you and others on the road. Michigan law prohibits a driver from reading, manually typing, or sending a text message while driving. Exceptions are in place for reporting crashes, crimes, or other emergencies.”
