Fire and Emergency New Zealand personnel from Ōpōtiki, Kaikohe, Westport, Ohakune and Kirwee were presented with their New Year’s Honours by Governor-General Patsy Reddy at Government House in Wellington today.
Syd Hughes and Bruce Thompson were honoured with Queen’s Service Medals for service to Fire and Emergency New Zealand and their communities. Jim Powdrill, Kevin Stechman and Stuart Jones received Queen’s Service Medals for service to Fire and Emergency New Zealand.
John Bowmar (Kaiwaka) was presented with his Queen’s Service Medal for services to Fire and Emergency New Zealand and the community by the Governor-General in Auckland on Monday 19 April.

Workers at a Northland beachside community have been turned around at police checkpoints this morning, shocked to discover they are part of the Auckland lockdown.
It comes as a Northland civic leader is annoyed at a lack of clarity around which areas are impacted by a change in Covid alert levels announced by the Government overnight.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand Board Chair Paul Swain has congratulated past and present firefighters from Kaiwaka, Opotiki, Kaikohe, Westport and Ohakune who have been recognised with Queen’s Service Medals in the 2021 New Year’s Honours list released today. We are very proud to have such dedicated people offer their time and skills to serve both their communities and Fire and Emergency New Zealand, said Mr Swain.
