BACKSTAGE AT OTTAWA | Maclean's | August 1, 1948

BACKSTAGE AT OTTAWA THE MAN WITH A NOTEBOOK IN BOTH the older parties these days, all the talk is about new leadership. The Liberals problem is out in the open and relatively simple. Since J. L. Ilsley s retirement, the number one candidate is Louis S. St. Laurent. Had Mr. Ilsley consented to run, he could probably have carried the Liberal convention. But now the only real opponent to Mr. St. Laurent is Hon. Jimmy Gardiner; Hon. Jimmy is a resourceful and tenacious fighter who should never be counted out in advance, but this time the odds are against him. There may be other candidates before the convention for the first ballot or two. Some Liberal strategists think it would be better not to let it develop as a straight two-man fight, for fear it might break down into English versus French. They’ve asked several people, including Premier Garson of Manitoba and Right Hon. C. D. Howe, to be ready to run in order to break up the English vote on the first ballot. This would give Mr.

Diocese of Brooklyn Donates Pews to Cathedral in Haiti

The Tablet February 19, 2021 The Cathedral of St. Anne is being renovated for the upcoming tricentennial celebration of the city where it’s located, Anse-à-Veau, Haiti. Renovations include pews, chairs, and a church bell donated by the Diocese of Brooklyn. (Photo: Cathedral of St. Anne via Facebook) WINDSOR TERRACE Gifts from the Diocese of Brooklyn arrived just in time for Christmas at the historic Cathedral of St. Anne in Anse-à-Veau, Haiti. However, these items were much too big to be placed in stockings and hung by the chimney with care. Instead, huge metal shipping crates held dozens of heavy, oak church pews donated to the cathedral from the Diocese of Brooklyn’s Office of Patrimony.

Being deprived of social occasions makes presence the best gift to give this year

Anyone who moans about how terrible they believe the Christmas relaxation to be should share their personal situation. Because for some people, it would mean spending Christmas Day alone in a random rented flat. Maybe that’s the right thing, but it is not pain that would be experienced equally. Whatever way we spend Christmas this year, it will be a modest affair. But, then again, the first Christmas was a pretty modest affair where, as the carol reminds us: “Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head.” While I think we all long for the time when we can meet and party and hug with friends – maybe this more modest Christmas can be a time of reflection. A time to give thanks for all the good things that we have, and value family and friendship more than ever.
