According to new forecast data from Gartner, Australian IT spending is set to grow 4.1 percent to $98.3 billion this year.
This is not only a return to growth after a 1.1 percent dip in 2020, but surpasses the pre-pandemic 2019 spend of $95.5 billion.
This growth is set to be across all spending segments, with the highest coming from devices at 9 percent, and enterprise software at 7.3 percent as, according to Gartner, organisations shift their focus to providing a more comfortable, innovative and productive environment for their workforce.
“Last year, IT spending took the form of a ‘knee jerk’ reaction to enable a remote workforce in a matter of weeks. As hybrid work takes hold, CIOs will focus on spending that enables innovation, not just task completion,” said distinguished research vice president John-David Lovelock.
The growth in spending on devices is linked to the permanent effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on usage patterns by employees and consumers, said Ranjit Atwal, senior research director at Gartner. “With remote work turning into hybrid work, home education changing into digital education, and interactive gaming moving to the cloud, both the types and number of devices people need, have and use will continue to rise,” he said.
Globally, the devices-installed base is on pace to reach 6.4 billion units in 2022, up 3.2% from 2021. While the shift to remote work exacerbated the decline of desktop PCs, it boosted the use of tablets and laptops. In 2021, the number of laptops and tablets in use will increase 8.8% and 11.7%, respectively, while the number of desk-based PCs is forecast to decline from 522 million in 2020 to 470 million in 2022.

Gartner in its latest forecast expects IT spending in India touch $93 billion in 2021, driven by digitisation of businesses outside of technology. Despite an increase of 7.3 per cent compared to last year, India s spend will be lower than global average, as worldwide IT spending is projected to total $4.1 trillion in 2021, an increase of 8.4 per cent year-on-year (YoY). While the world IT spending forecast expects devices (14 per cent) and enterprise software (10.8 per cent) to lead the growth with organisations looking at spending on innovation, ease and productivity of workforce, Cloud is expected to drive majority of the expected software growth in India this year.

The analyst firm Gartner has said that worldwide IT spending will reach $4.1
trillion in 2021, representing an increase of 8.4% compared to 2020. The prediction is higher than that estimated by the firm in January when it said worldwide IT spending would be just shy of $4 trillion at $3.9 trillion.
Commenting on the revised figures, John-David Lovelock, research vice president at Gartner said:
“IT no longer just supports corporate operations as it traditionally has, but is fully participating in business value delivery. Not only does this shift IT from a back-office role to the front of business, but it also changes the source of funding from an overhead expense that is maintained, monitored and sometimes cut, to the thing that drives revenue.”
