Former Wales and Lions captain and coach John Dawes dies at the age of 80

“We’re unfortunately having to report some very sad news. After a period of ill health, John Dawes sadly passed away this morning,” his former club Newbridge said in a statement published on social media. “Everyone associated with our game will be aware of John’s story and his great achievements within the game of rugby union. “The heartfelt condolences of everyone here at Newbridge RFC go out to John’s family at this very sad time.” Dawes, who played for London Welsh as well as Newbridge, was a central figure in Wales’ glory years in the 1970s. His most successful year in the Test arena was also his final one as he announced his international retirement in 1971 having won the Grand Slam and been at the helm for a 2-1 series victory over the All Blacks.

Sir Ian McGeechan, Willie John McBride, John Taylor and Peter Wheeler led tributes to Dawes, a man whose achievements with Wales and the Lions are unparalleled. Dawes captained Wales six times across his 22 caps and was ubiquitous throughout his country s golden era when, in 1971, he led them to the first of three Grand Slams in a decade, winning a further two as coach.

LEGEND: John Dawes captained and coached Wales and the Lions JOHN Dawes, the legendary former Wales and Lions captain and coach, has died at the age of 80. Dawes is the only man to have led the British and Irish Lions to a series victory in New Zealand after being skipper on the 1971 tour. The Abercarn-born centre won 22 caps for Wales after his debut in 1964 and was captain for the Grand Slam triumph in 1971 before heading off to face the All Blacks. Dawes became national coach and won the Five Nations title four times, two of them Grand Slams, and won four triple crowns. He coached the Lions in New Zealand in 1977.
