Home-grown leader to be ECUs new chancellor: UNC Board of Governors picks Philip Rogers

East Carolina University’s 12th chancellor is a man with deep ties to the university and Greenville. The University of North Carolina Board of Governors unanimously approved Philip Rogers, former chief of staff at ECU, on Thursday. He’ll assume the role on March 15. Rogers, who grew up in Greenville, comes to ECU from the American Council on Education, where he has served as senior vice president for learning and engagement since July 2018. The council is a research, policy and advocacy organization for the nation’s colleges and universities and represents more than 1,700 public and private higher education institutions. “Dr. Rogers is a driven leader who brings energy and vitality to ECU,” said UNC System President Peter Hans. “He has broad national higher education experience and deep local roots in Greenville. Bulls Gap man who used handgun, machete to threaten wife sentenced to 18 years

ROGERSVILLE — A Bulls Gap man who was charged twice in less than a week earlier this year, once for shooting at his wife, and then for attacking her vehicle with a machete, was sentenced last week to 18 years, although only two of those must be served in jail. Robert Paul Rector, 49, 1322 Bulls Gap/St. Clair Road, Bulls Gap, pleaded guilty in Hawkins County Criminal court in two separate cases. In the first case he was sentenced by Judge John Dugger to 12 years in exchange for guilty pleas to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and aggravated assault stemming from an incident that occurred on June 30.

Convicted 2017 Bloomingdale shooter sentenced to 6 years for Hawkins assault

ROGERSVILLE — The gunman who kidnapped a Mount Carmel woman in 2017 and used her as bait to lure out a shooting victim in Bloomingdale was sentenced to six years last week in Hawkins County Criminal Court. That brings the total amount of time that Jarrett Cole “Shroom” Heitmann is now serving up to 24 years. Heitmann, 28, of Bristol, Tennessee, pleaded guilty in federal court in 2018 to unrelated marijuana trafficking charges in exchange for a 10-year sentence. This past Feb. 14, Heitmann pleaded guilty in Sullivan County Criminal Court to attempted second-degree murder and kidnapping in exchange for an eight-year sentence, which must be consecutive to the federal time. The six-year sentence handed down Dec. 11 by Judge John Dugger is to be served consecutive to those other two sentences.

New Braunfels Long Creek will be district s second high school

New Braunfels Independent School District trustees approved the new name at its Monday night meeting out of a list that also included New Braunfels Heritage High School, New Braunfels Legend Point High School and New Braunfels East High School. The vote passed 5-2 with board president Sherry Harrison and newly-elected trustee John Tucker voting against.  Board vice president Wes Clark, secretary David Heefner, newly-elected trustee Nancy York and trustees Keith D. Smith and Eric Bergquist voted in favor.

Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Patrick Foley issued the sentence Monday to 22-year-old John Tucker, whom investigators initially charged with 12 counts of sexual assault involving at least four of Tuckers younger relatives or acquaintances, ranging in age from 1 year to 6 years old at the time of the crimes.
