BHP signs deal with W A s biggest solar farm to supply half of refinery s power needs

The 100MW AC (132MW DC) Merredin solar is the newest and biggest solar farm in W.A., having been completed in 2020. It was built by Risen Energy (Australia). “This agreement will bolster current and future Western Australian renewable projects,” said John Zhong, vice general manager at Risen Energy (Australia). “We look forward to welcoming many more clean energy partnerships to power manufacturing, minerals processing and other Western Australian industries.” BHP Nickel West’s asset president Eddy Haegel said the deal with the Merredin solar farm will cut the refinery’s electricity bill by up to 20 per cent, as well as cutting missions by 50 per cent.

However, the predictive power of these simulations depends on having a means to confirm that they do indeed describe the real world. Such confirmation is no simple task. Many assumptions enter the setup of these simulations. As a result, the simulations must be carefully checked by using an appropriate validation protocol involving experimental measurements.

From Charles Dickens to woolly mammoths: great long reads of 2020

It’s been an interesting year on The Conversation Insights desk. We’ve produced a raft of compelling stories from academics carrying out research all over the world in an attempt to answer some of life’s most important questions. Whether it’s a millionaire bunker builder living in a revamped intercontinental ballistic missile silo in Texas or a doctor on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic in Liverpool, our long reads have featured fascinating people with amazing tales to tell. This being 2020, there have also been stories tinged with sadness. But what all our stories have in common is a sense of hope. Here are some of our personal highlights.
