Declaring war on the climate emergency TIME FOR DEFENSIVE ACTION
Ahead of US president
Joe Biden’s climate summit this week, more than 30 current and former defence personnel have formed the Australian Security Leaders Climate Group, which argues the Australian government is lagging behind its allies in combating climate change, and is pushing for a whole-of-nation assessment of the security risks the climate emergency poses.
Former chief of defence Admiral
Chris Barrie told the Nine papers “As ex-service members and experienced practitioners of national and international security who have witnessed up close the devastation of war and crisis, we recognise that climate change is a fundamental threat to the security and prosperity of all Australians. Yet Australia is ill prepared for climate impacts, with climate security risks not being fully assessed or understood in Australia.”

Murder investigation continues
Police divers and homicide detectives will return to the NSW Hunter region today to continue the search for information about the unsolved murder of Melissa Hunt.
The body of the 22-year-old was found near the weir wall of Burrenjim Dam near Stockrington in April 1994.
A post-mortem examination found she died from severe head injuries but no arrests were ever made.
Police received information about the case after a $1 million reward was offered last December and said they would conduct further searches today.

A Singleton pub owner and a local councillor have been named as the latest candidates to join the running for the upcoming byelection in the NSW Upper Hunter.
One Nation NSW on Thursday announced Singleton businessman Dale McNamara will run as its candidate in the critical byelection, while the NSW Greens earlier named Upper Hunter councillor Sue Abbott.
Mr McNamara is a former miner with business experience in agriculture, horse racing and hospitality.

“Dale’s first priority is economic development, protecting coal jobs and assisting every industry in the Upper Hunter that can help bring down unemployment and give young people here a strong future,” said One Nation NSW leader Mark Latham, who had himself toyed with running for the seat.
