Just over 200 years ago, British physician and scientist Edward Jenner made history by injecting his gardener s eight-year-old son with the world’s first ever vaccine. It was here, in Jenner’s handsome Queen Anne manor house in Gloucestershire, where the doctor cured smallpox, the deadly disease that had swept the world for centuries.
And now, as we await the call from the NHS inviting us to receive the groundbreaking jab combatting Covid-19, many of Britain’s grandest landmarks are opening their doors as local vaccination centres. Missed attending Sunday sermons at Westminster Abbey? Or exploring space at The Science Museum? Those residing in boroughs such as South Kensington, Westminster and St John’s Wood may have a sneak peak at some of London’s favourite hotspots – where receiving your vaccination alongside Henry James and William Shakespeare acts as the perfect antidote when it comes to needle-nerves.
