DOVER The city s building and zoning administrator is recommending that Dover take action to ban the use of shipping containers as houses or storage buildings. I m trying to get out in front of this before we do have some people start putting some shipping containers as storage buildings or building houses, John McFadden told council members during a meeting of the Planning, Zoning & Codes Committee.
Shipping containers are gaining popularity as homes around the United States because they are inexpensive to purchase. McFadden said they cost between $1,600 and $4,000 and a modest house can be built for about $40,000.
The containers are also plentiful, with several million of them available around North American ports and rail yards.
