The release of the Palace Papers last year was meant to settle one of the enduring questions of the 1975 dismissal: was there a smoking gun implicating Buckingham Palace and the Queen in the decision of governor-general Sir John Kerr to sack the Whitlam government?
Perhaps unsurprisingly, it did no such thing. The ardent republicans and Whitlam supporters saw nods and winks from the Queenâs private secretary, Sir Martin Charteris, to Kerr. The monarchists and Coalition supporters were insistent it was all Kerrâs doing.
Lawyers feasted over the 212 letters from Kerr and Charterisâ replies to build a case for or against the palace. Two of the more famous â former High Court justice Michael Kirby and expat barrister Geoffrey Robertson, QC â have now done so in lengthy pieces for the July issue of
A little bit of background? I was born and bred at Holms Farm, Dalrymple, being the oldest of nine – five boys and four girls – there was never going to be enough work for all of us with our Ayrshire pedigree herd at the time. Winona Fine Arts Commission announces Poetry Walk selections (5/26/2021)
In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Winona Fine Arts Commission is very pleased to announce final selections for the second year of the public art initiative: The Winona Poetry Walk. This project consists of original poetry stamped into sidewalks and installation of the poems will be ongoing in summer and fall 2021. Stay tuned for a viewing and poetry reading celebration upon completion of the installations.
The FAC requested submissions of original short poems (or parts of poems) and received a wonderful variety of responses. Ten poems have been selected by the following poets: Jerome Christenson, Michael William Doyle, Dan Eastman, Parker Forsell, Nancy Kay Peterson, Marcia Ratliff, Steve Schild, Sabrina Schlichting, and Lucas Stangl. The Fine Arts Commission has also continued their inclusion of one professional poet of renown or public title with a work by former Wiscons
