Columbia Public Works Director Dave Nichols to retire in October Columbia Daily Tribune Public Works Director Dave Nichols will retire this October after 16 years of service with the City of Columbia. During that time, Nichols served as chief engineer, manager of engineering and inspections, and assistant director of public works, according to a city news release announcing his retirement. He has served as director of public works since 2015. His last day with the city will be Oct. 14. I’ve had a wonderful career with the city,” Nichols said. “I’ve developed lasting relationships with so many people these past 16 years. I am especially grateful for my public works staff who have made coming to work so enjoyable and the dedication they have for the department and the citizens of Columbia.
