KENNEBUNK, Maine – The town is proposing significant changes to its process and fees for beach parking permits.
Currently, residents can get their first vehicle permit for free, while second and third ones cost $5 and $10, respectively. According to Finance Director Joel Downs, the town is proposing $5 for every permit, starting with the first.
Another proposed change: license plate numbers would be printed on the permit, restricting a permit to a particular vehicle.
“That’s very much of a change,” Downs said.
Residents also would be required to present proof that they are a taxpayer in town, Downs said.
The proposed changes are consistent with what other Maine coastal communities have been doing with their beach parking permitting process, Downs noted.

After I spoke at your last meeting another member of our community spoke. Here is an exact transcription of what they said:
Hi guys. I just tuned in late and I apologize. I don’t think this circus should continue any longer. John has made his point repeatedly, repeatedly, repeatedly and it’s time for him to be shut down and sent off to whatever world he thinks he believes in.
As I have stated time and again, I believe strongly that in public discourse we need to be gentle on people and tough on ideas. In keeping with that ethos, I am not naming the speaker. Please note that their comment was a precise inversion of that principle. The comment consisted solely of a personal attack on me. Indeed, the speaker apparently joined the meeting after I had spoken, so was not responding to the content of my remarks.
