7/2/21 An Iowa City transient has been arrested after he allegedly attacked another vagrant in an apparent panhandler turf war. According to arrest records, 49-year-old Jon Abel confronted another homeless man at the intersection of Highway 1 and Riverside Drive just before 7:15am on June 27th. Each man believed they had the right to beg at the intersection. The two wrestled until a Johnson County Sheriff’s deputy arrived to break it up. Both men later claimed the other started the fight. Abel is charged with Disorderly Conduct. He pleaded not guilty on Wednesday, and on Thursday Judge Thomas Winston set a trial date of September 23rd.
