Landlord claims operators of Bewley s want taxpayer to foot their rent bill by donating Harry Clarke windows

RGRE has told Bewley s Café Grafton Street Ltd and Bewley s Ltd they can t try to sell us what we already own . The six windows, located on the ground floor, are estimated to be worth more than €1m, according to RGRE. However, Bewley’s argues the windows were never part of the property and have from time to time, subject to statutory requirements, been moved freely within the premises. They have been treated as ornamental decorative panels and have always remained in Bewley s ownership, they say. On Monday, Mr Justice David Barniville admitted proceedings by RGRE Gafton against the Bewley s group companies, whose principal is Paddy Campbell, to the fast-track Commercial Court list. The case comes back in June.

The Department of Justice’s Immigrant Investor Programme (IIP) allows non-EU citizens and their families the right to live in the Republic in return for investments or charity donations. Bartra confirmed on Friday that it has been using the scheme to raise capital from Chinese investors to build social housing and nursing homes in the Republic.
