State Fair Community College’s Theatre Arts program will present an adaption of “Oedipus” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 25-27 and 2 p.m. Feb. 28 in the Thompson O’Sullivan Studio Theatre in Yeater Learning Center. Admission is free.
Sophocles’ “Oedipus Rex” is a play about truth and fate. Oedipus’ fate is determined by the Gods when his life begins. However, because Oedipus does not know the truth about who he really is, he does not accept that his fate is even possible. He lives his life under the assumption he is someone that he is not; therefore, making choices based on the truth he knows. Apollo, the Greek God of prophecy, through his Oracle at Delphi, presents this fate to not only Oedipus’ father but also to Oedipus himself. Initially, Oedipus is sent away from his fate and then later in his life, he runs from it.
