Taiwan plans to export pineapples to Australia
On March 5, Lin Jiansong, former president of the World Federation of the Taiwan Chambers of Commerce (WTCC), confirmed that Taiwan is currently preparing to ship two tons of pineapples to Australia, one ton to Brisbane, and one ton to Melbourne.
It seems that Taiwan is beginning to realize that marketing pineapples to Southeast Asia is an unrealistic idea, and has begun to look for other solutions. However, an earlier report by Taiwan s Zhongshi News showed that the air freight cost to Australia is about 200-300 NT dollars per kilogram, and Taiwan’s Council of Agriculture will provide a subsidy of 105 NT dollars per kilogram transported by air. Compared with the price of NT$30 per kilo, it can be said that Taiwan has to make a loss of about six pineapples before one pineapple can be sold. This has aroused strong dissatisfaction among scholars and growers on the island.
