Florida s chief financial officer made a pitch for Backing the Blue as he spoke Tuesday at the 2021 Florida Sheriffs Association Winter Conference at the Sawgrass Marriott in Ponte Vedra Beach.
Jimmy Patronis specifically asked for their support of Gov. Ron DeSantis violence and law enforcement protection act so it gets passed by the Florida Legislature, adding he does not want any action that would defund police departments.
The proposal is aimed at cracking down on protesters with new felonies for when property is damaged or people injured as a result of protests involving seven or more individuals.
But he is against any legislation that could lessen funding for Florida law enforcement departments, such as was proposed and defeated in September in Jacksonville s City Council. He said he is concerned by what he called certain anti-police elements beginning to take roots in the political institutions of our state.
