Jackson State University and several community partners will be giving away 1,500 free food boxes to the community on Saturday, university officials said Friday.
According to a news release, the university s Center for Community Engagement will host the food box giveaway starting at 9 a.m. at the Blackburn Middle School parking lot, located at 1311 West Pearl Street.
The boxes, which will include non-perishable food items, will be given out on a first come, first serve basis. According to the release, the drive-thru event aims to help families in need.
Jackson State University partnered with TDC Premier Trucking LLC, a trucking company in the southeast region, Amazon and Hosea Helps, an organization dedicated to investigating and raising awareness of families facing poverty.

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. The Madison County Fire Department will join the city of Jackson Fire Department in participating in a statewide “Front Porch Fire Prevention” campaign canvas on Saturday.
The canvas is sponsored by the State Fire Marshal’s office and includes partnerships with 92 departments across the state.
The Madison County Fire Department will be distributing packets of educational information in the Christmasville Road area beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, April 17.
After serving with the Jackson Fire Department for a little more than 23 years, Division Fire Chief Cleotha Sanders is leaving, he confirmed Wednesday afternoon.
His last day is Friday. He starts a new job with Jackson State University on Monday as the director of campus safety and emergency management. I m not resigning because I m unhappy with the department, Sanders said. I have another opportunity that came available to go and serve the community over at Jackson State University.
Sanders started with the Jackson Fire Department on March 23, 1998. He began as a firefighter before becoming a relief driver operator, a fire lieutenant and fire captain. He was eventually appointed as a division fire chief for the Office of Fire Investigations.

JACKSON, MI – Kenneth Melville could be seen everywhere in Jackson, whether he was driving his Jackson Fire Department chief service car home, at the Cascades Golf Course, having breakfast at Spring Arbor’s Wooden Spoon diner, riding in parades on his high-wheeler bike or drilling with Jackson’s famous Zouaves.
Melville’s impact in the Jackson community spanned his entire life, which ended on Aug. 30, 2020, at age 93. Now, his family is honoring his legacy by sponsoring the Michigan Theatre of Jackson’s popcorn drive-up pick-up from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 15-16, at 124 N. Mechanic St.
