SOUTH BEND, Ind. Marcus Freeman did an advance scout on five-star defensive end Brenan Vernon before the Ohio prospect made Notre Dame one of his stops on a whirlwind tour of June visits that took him from Columbus to Tuscaloosa to South Bend. Vernon had not given away much in his recruitment beyond his measurables (6-foot-5, 245 pounds) and hometown of Mentor, which isn’t just Buckeyes country, it’s one of its strongholds.
But Vernon let Notre Dame in at least a little bit, revealing a devotion to Vans shoes. They were Vernon’s thing. Notre Dame didn’t ask why. It just went with it. Then Freeman, the defensive coordinator, went out and bought the entire defensive staff Vans to wear when Vernon arrived on campus last week.

No. 2: QB Zach Wilson (BYU) Any doubt that the Jets were going this route has now been put to bed, as the Jets traded Sam Darnold to Carolina. The near certainty of the first pick is perhaps now matched by the near certainty of the second. Wilson has great arm strength and an ability to make things happen outside the pocket, even though his pre-2020 production, injury history and weaker strength of competition at BYU are all things to consider. Set: Quarterback, Running Back
The team has all world quarterback Patrick Mahomes and he’s not going anywhere. For now, they have Chad Henne at backup and he’s a free agent next year, but this obviously isn’t a glaring need. Perhaps they could take a future backup QB but then they’d have to carry three on the depth chart. They also just used a first round pick on Clyde Edwards-Helaire last year, Darrell Williams proved serviceable (especially on passing downs as CEH gets acclimated to pass protection at NFL speeds), and they still have Darwin Thompson and Elijah McGuire as well. Running back isn’t something I’d spend on early again.
