A look back at 2020 in Jackson County
Few words some perhaps not printable better describe 2020 than “unprecedented.”
From the day coronavirus first made its appearance on the front page of The Tribune on Feb. 20, you’d be hard-pressed to find any story that didn’t contain COVID-19, pandemic or coronavirus on the front page or any inside page for that matter. In fact, there have been more than 1,000 news items containing the word coronavirus and/or COVID-19 this year.

Alabama investigating secret surveillance of courthouse employee

Who’s been secretly watching a courthouse employee at the Jackson County Courthouse in Scottsboro?
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation has been asked to look into the discovery of a security camera allegedly trained on a county courthouse employee, according to a statement Monday by the Jackson County Commission.
In the statement, the four district commissioners called it inappropriate surveillance.
“The commissioners take this allegation very seriously and are providing full cooperation with the investigation,” the statement reads.
“Neither these commissioners nor the courthouse security committee were aware of the placement of the particular camera involved in the present investigation,” Monday’s statement reads.
County 4-H educator receives national award

When Heather VonDielingen found out last spring she had won an award, she was completely surprised.
The Purdue Extension Jackson County 4-H youth development educator received an Achievement in Service Award from the National Association of Extension 4-H Youth Development professionals (NAE4-HYDP).
“I was humbled to receive this award, and it was very special coming from my Indiana 4-H extension educator colleagues,” VonDielingen said. “To be honest, when I found out I received the award last spring, I had to ask another 4-H educator how I received it.”

KANSAS CITY, Mo. â A man with a history of drunk driving is accused of killing a woman in a high-speed, drunk driving crash in Kansas City, Missouri.
Coty E. Holder, 32, of Independence, Missouri, is charged in Jackson County Court with DWI - Death of Another Not a Passenger.
The deadly crash happened just after 11 p.m. on December 17 on eastbound Interstate 435 near Grandview Road, according to a court document.
CHIPPEWA FALLS â Homeowners in Chippewa and Jackson counties have filed new lawsuits against sand mines, claiming the mines are causing negative health impacts and loss of property value.
Kevin and Donna Zwiefelhofer, 14746 Highway DD, Bloomer, filed the lawsuit Friday in Chippewa County Court against EOG Resources of Chippewa Falls, Kraemer Mining & Materials Inc., of Burnsville, Minn., and those companiesâ insurance providers.
Also, nine residents from Hixton or Taylor filed a claim in Jackson County Court on Friday against Wisconsin Proppants LLC, WP Operations LLC, Turnkey Process Solutions, and those companiesâ insurance providers. Both cases are requesting a court trial with 12 jurors. The defendants have 45 days to respond in court to each lawsuit.
