Book Review: Mike Nichols: A Life
By David Poland
When it makes you feel like you have a personal stake in the story.
Autobiography and Industry Insight books written by William Goldman, Steven Soderbergh, Julia Phillips, Linda Obst and John Gregory Dunne have done that for me and stand with the most important books in my movie library.
There are a bunch of books with more detail or equally powerful insights, books by Lumet and Mamet and Sondheim that are must-reads. There are biographies that are ultimately about paradigm shifts, like Tony Hendra’s remembrance of the Lampoon group (that dominated comedy for decades) or Goldman’s “The Season” or David Puttnam’s “Movies & Money,” which is as relevant today as when it was when published in 2000 as it would also have been in 1970 or 1940.

Rent control advocates and a local tenant union want to join the city of Portland in opposing a lawsuit filed by local landlords looking to nullify a series of renter protections passed by voters last fall.
The lawsuit, filed Jan. 28 by the Southern Maine Landlord Association, seeks to block the implementation of “An Act to Protect Tenants,” a citizen initiative approved by 58 percent of the voters in November. It limits most rent increases to the rate of inflation, increases the amount of notice a landlord must provide when not renewing an at-will tenancy and creates a Rent Board to enforce the ordinance and award additional rent increases when appropriate.
Trending Winterhawks: March 18 starts a compact schedule
Updated Feb 24, 2021;
1. A sprint begins March 18
The WHL’s Central Division, which is the province of Alberta, begins this Friday. Their teams are playing two games per weekend, with the same matchup in both games. Because the division has an odd number of teams, there will have to be byes. So for the season those teams will be playing less than two games per week. Their schedule isn’t filled out yet but if they follow their announced guidelines the earliest the regular season ends will be June 5.
The Winterhawks and the US Division are taking, shall we say, a different approach. They will start three weeks later than Alberta, on March 18, and finish three weeks earlier, on May 11.
