Jacko Gill stunned a big crowd at the Christchurch International Track Meet with his third successive win over Canterbury s former world champion Tom Walsh.
Not many athletes can claim to have set a personal best and beaten a former world champion in their second event of the day – but Jacko Gill can after his third successive win over Kiwi shot put rival Tom Walsh. Gill produced a 21.52m effort at the International Track Meet in Christchurch on Saturday night to beat hometown hero Walsh’s season-best 21.46m. The Aucklander’s winning throw came just hours after he’d hurled 21.19m at an event to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Shaka Sola’s Throwing Academy in Lower Hutt.

Few athletics venues in the world are as synonymous with
the mile as Cooks Gardens in Whanganui, and Camille Buscomb
and Sam Tanner lived up to that rich tradition by claiming
the New Zealand Mile Championship titles on a historic night
of action at the Cooks Classic.
After a 52-year
absence, both national mile crowns were re-introduced with
the men’s race following the script as the gifted
20-year-old Tanner added the national title over the
‘classic distance’ to the New Zealand 3000m crown he
snared last weekend in Hastings.
