READERS weighed-in on the struggles of Whitehaven s town centre which traders say are exacerbated by a lack of parking spaces. The economy showed signs of recovery in March, but Whitehaven business owner Gerard Richardson is still concerned about traders on a local level. “The steady move of spending away from the high street to the internet became a deluge during the lockdown and as the trend was in that direction anyway, it’s unlikely that we will reverse it now, he said. Mr Richardson said that visitors should be encouraged more to access the town centre, but with loading bays now marked out for goods vehicles only, he said they feared being ticketed.

You can tell an awful lot about a politician by how they react to an election defeat. This week we learned that Sir Keir Starmer is neither a lucky general or is cool under fire. His interview on Friday afternoon was a textbook classic of how not to react. He looked like a rabbit in the headlights and didn t seem to comprehend the scale of what had happened. He promised to take full responsibility himself. Twenty four hours later we learned he had sacked Angela Rayner, the chair of the Labour Party and campaign co-ordinator. Given Labour s problems seem to be a lack of ability to reach out to northern working class voter, it didn t really seem a good idea to sack a norrthern working class woman.
