Taoiseach backs call for adequate staffing at Nenagh Hospital

Micheál Martin was questioned by Tipperary TD Jackie Cahill on the issue in the Dáil, after the Medical Assessment Unit has been forced to close on multiple days since last week. The unit is due to resume full opening hours next Monday, and Labour’s Alan Kelly says recruitment for a further registrar at the unit is underway. However, deputy Cahill says a full-time consultant needs to be appointed, and the Taoiseach had this response in the Dáil.

May 12, 2021 6:23 pm A division in opinion has formed among TDs in the Dáil – and government ministers – over comments made by the Taoiseach Micheál Martin in relation to An Taisce’s continuing objection to the proposed Glanbia cheese production facility in Belview, Co. Kilkenny. TDs of various parties and none voiced their views on the matter over the past day, with Solidarity – People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy going so far as to state: “The Taoiseach’s behaviour in relation to An Taisce is reminiscent of Donald Trump.” Speaking on RTÉ’sMorning Ireland today (Wednesday, May 12) Green Party TD and government minister Roderic O’Gorman said An Taisce was “best placed” to decide whether or not to put in an appeal, adding that “politicians should leave” legal processes to play out.

Cahill: Dept of Agriculture inefficiency has forestry industry in crisis

The Department of Agriculture is currently dealing with a backlog of 6,300 forestry license applications, but only processed 37 last week despite the hiring of additional ecologists and forestry inspectors last year. Speaking on the topic of housing, Deputy Cahill said the cost of construction materials such as timber has spiralled. He says the core of the forestry problem is inefficiency within the Department: “I had a timber contractor on to me last week who had 12 people employed and heavy liabilities on the machinery that he had purchased.”

Cabinet approves Fair Deal Scheme legislation

The legislation will be aimed at amending the scheme to make it more accessible for small business owners and farming families. Reacting to the development today (Tuesday, May 11), Fianna Fáil TD Jackie Cahill – who is the chairperson of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine – welcomed the new legislation, remarking that the scheme “will be a lot fairer”. The Tipperary TD acknowledged the work of Minister of State for mental health and older people Mary Butler for bringing the legislation before cabinet.
