Earlier this week, Justin Wick took a look at what the Colorado Rockies have in reserve for bullpen arms if a call-up is to be made. The bullpen has been an atrocity, especially lately, so seeking an answer to the question of “What else we got? ‘Cause this ain’t working” is pertinent.
That got me thinking about the other side of the ball. We’ve already seen Alan Trejo, Connor Joe and Matt Adams receive the call to the big leagues this season, so what other reinforcements do we have laying around in the minors? In any season, injuries and underperformance are bound to occur throughout the campaign and this season the Rockies are more of a clear “seller” than ever, so spots could open in the not too distant future because of departure as well.

The Rockies and Reds combined for 27 hits and 21 runs in last night’s Colorado victory. The Blake Street faithful will hope for similar offensive production from their team on Friday when the Rockies face off against Wade Miley, who himself is on the heels of the finest start of his career.
Miley (4-2, 2.00 ERA) threw a no-hitter in his last start, striking out eight and allowing just one walk. After a tough 2020 season Miley’s 2021 has been in stark contrast. He leads the team in wins, ERA, WHIP (fifth place in the league in that category), and batting average against (of qualified pitchers) the Reds’ ace, without question. The season is only a month and a half in, but so far he’s been a very bright spot for Cincinnati. Miley did not face the Rockies last season.
The Rockies are a weird franchise. Time and time again we see them make baffling moves and decisions that seem to defy all logic. If you tell them to zig, more than likely they are going to zag. It’s part of the experience as a fan and sometimes makes them somewhat endearing. The Rockies also have a bizarre method of signing aging free agents, especially when it comes to pitchers.
Just this past week, it was reported that the Rockies signed veteran pitchers Ivan Nova and Chris Rusin to minor league deals to build out pitching depth in the organization. One day prior to Opening Day they signed Jhoulys Chacín to the roster to fill in the bullpen. We have also seen them sign veteran pitchers like Roy Oswalt who don’t quite pan out as the team hoped. But perhaps the weirdest signing the Rockies have made was that of Jamie Moyer in 2012.
Happy Opening Day everyone! The long, dark winter is unofficially over and we can officially get going on the 2021 MLB season.
After an offseason full of trauma for fans, less than stellar projections, and soundbites about proving people wrong, the Rockies will finally take the field for their first game of the year today. As painful as this offseason has been, it’s hard not to be excited. That’s just the magic of Opening Day. While some fans have vowed to avoid forking over money for tickets, fan allowance for the first time since September 29, 2019 means others will finally be back in seats in the Mile High City, taking in a Rockies game, providing
