The Art of Glass Blowing - San Antonio Magazine

The Art of Glass Blowing Justin Parr knows how to make the perfect drinking glass. But, he says, it’s not only “super boring,” it’s also exactly what you can purchase at any big box store without a second thought. “A lot of craftspeople lean toward perfection. If you’ve made something 100 times, you’re going to make it perfect,” he says. “My goal has never been to do that.” Instead, each of the thousands of glasses he has created since getting into glass art over a decade ago are unique. With flat bottoms for easy storage in cupboards and glass thick enough to not break with everyday use, they’re utilitarian. “But they’re kind of a little wonky and have the look that someone made them,” he says. “They’re all personal.”

Now more than 50 miles into my attempt to circumnavigate San Antonio on foot, my feet are sore and my is skin burnt, but my eyes are newly opened to huge swaths of the Alamo City. During my last trek, Leon Creek revealed miles of wonderful rocky cliffs and native plants, while the Medina River’s Land Heritage Institute proved an essential  and heretofore unknown to me destination for local nature lovers. The leg I’m recounting in this installment of my occasional series connected the Medina River Greenway to the River Walk’s Mission Reach.

Local glass artist spreads joy through hand-crafted creations

A San Antonio glass artist creates creativity you can hold. Author: Audrey Castoreno, Michael Vigil (KENS5) Published: 11:10 AM CDT April 14, 2021 Updated: 12:59 PM CDT April 14, 2021 SAN ANTONIO At his studio on the southside of San Antonio amongst nature, his peacock Handsomer, and cats is where artist Justin Parr feels most at home.  I always wanted to be an artist, Parr said. “I started kind of just making drinking glasses and it felt good to me.” Creating art in many different forms and fashions for the last 20 years, its when he’s blowing glass that he’s found his flow. I like to make marks on them that you can see and you can kind of feel a little bit of a texture and you can tell this glass is handmade, Parr said. Verses something… You can go buy a perfect glass at Target, but you can’t buy a glass like this.

Combined Clubs Summer Pennant Series

Wild conditions on the River Derwent in Hobart - Combined Clubs Summer Pennant 2020-21 © Jane Austin Sailing was not for the faint-hearted in Race Nine of the Combined Clubs Summer Pennant Series sailed on the River Derwent on Saturday. The fleet was forewarned about the wild and windy weather but didn t expect to beat off the start line to the windward mark in 30+ knots and to fly down the River at breakneck speed. In the almost five-hour race, there was less than 30 seconds between first and second in divisions 1, 3 and 4, testament to the intense competition across the fleet. The Melges 32, Assagai (Chris Sheehan) flew out of the blocks in Division 1, had a wipe-out just off Sandy Bay Beach, but still got to the bottom mark in Variety Bay, well in front. The fleet struggled to set kites in the heavy winds, but conditions eventually settled to a consistent 20 knots. A stand out in Division 1 was the tacking duel between Advantedge (Andrew Jones) and Fork in the R
