Contrary to the prediction of the Meteorological (MeT) Department, residents in Srinagar and other parts of the valley woke up on Sunday morning to a beautiful view of snow spread all around. Snowfall began late on Saturday night in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir. “As of now snowfall is likely to decrease gradually and there will be a temporary break till evening,” the MeT says.

Banihal (J-K): The work on the double tube 8.5-km-long Banihal-Qazigund tunnel along the 270-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway is nearing completion and is likely to open for traffic in March.
The work on the Rs 2100-crore project started in June 2011 by Navyuga engineering company and on completion would reduce the road distance between Banihal in Jammu province and Qazigund in south Kashmir by 16 km from the present 35 km and will bypass Jawahar Tunnel and Shaitan Nalla, which is prone to heavy snowfall and slippery conditions during winters.
“The work within and outside is in the final stage and we are hopeful to throw it open for traffic in the last week of March,” Chief Manager, Navayuga Engineering Company, Muneeb Tak told PTI.

Stranded truckers appeal for evacuation from Patnitop
JAMMU, Dec 29: Hundreds of truck drivers including oil tankers who got stranded on 270-kilometer-long Srinagar - Jammu highway amidst fresh snowfall at Patnitop, appealed IGP Traffic to evacuate them and safeguard their lives.
Talking to reporter over phone, a truck driver namely Sajad Ahmad Khatana said that there are around 2500 trucks stranded on Srinagar -Jammu highway right now since last three days. He said the stranded drivers have consumed all stuff what they had available in their tucks and now are going without food since last three days as authorities have stopped them from moving ahead.
