Last week in Africa, ongoing insecurity prompted the enactment of a state of siege in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, and a parliamentary proposal for similar emergency powers in Nigeria; opposition claims of government illegitimacy prompted violent clashes in Chad and Somalia; and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) launched deadly assaults on military bases across multiple countries in the Lake Chad basin.
In Mogadishu, the capital city of
Somalia, government forces clashed with soldiers opposing an extension to President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed’s presidential term. Multiple fatalities were reported, and at least 60,000 people were displaced by the fighting (UN RC/HC Somalia, 28 April 2021). This is the Irish conservationist who was gunned down with two Basque journalists in west Africa – in an attack blamed on a deadly Islamic group.
Rory Young (48) was shot dead with reporters David Beriain (44) and Roberto Fraile (47) in Burkina Faso on Monday evening, after the anti-poaching patrol they were on was ambushed.
Mr Young, who was born and bred in Zambia but has an Irish passport and is an Irish citizen, was one of Africa’s best-known conservationists.

Last week in Africa, Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno was killed on the battlefield by rebel fighters, prompting a military takeover of the government; international forces maintained a prominent role in combatting entrenched Islamist and domestic militant insurgencies across the Sahel and central Africa; and dozens of fatalities were reported during ongoing intercommunal violence in South Sudan and Ethiopia.

Chad, President Idriss Deby Itno died from injuries sustained during clashes with Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT) militants on the frontlines in Kanem region. Following his death, the Chadian constitution was suspended, the National Assembly was dissolved, and a Transitional Military Council, headed by Deby’s son, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, was established and took over the government (DW, 21 April 2021).
