Production of kadomatsu, the traditional bamboo and pine decorations that herald the New Year, is in full swing at the Soshi gardening company in Tonosho, Chiba Prefecture, Japan. When production started in September, the company was concerned that orders might decrease due to the spread of the novel coronavirus. However, it received orders for about 1,100 pairs, the usual level. Kadomatsu are often placed in pairs at an entrance as a good-luck talisman to welcome the New Year deity. Many of the company s kadomatsu will be displayed at hotels and other facilities in Tokyo. We re making kadomatsu with all our hearts, hoping that next year will be a blessed one, said company President Hiroshi Yamada.Japan News-Yomiuri
