How do slow anomalies beneath subducting slabs affect giant megathrust earthquakes?

E-Mail Credit: IOCAS Earthquakes and volcanoes in subduction zones may cause great human catastrophe. Previous studies on subduction zone structure and causal mechanisms of giant megathrust earthquakes (M ≥ 9.0) have mainly focused on aspects like subducting plates and plate interfaces. In contrast, the oceanic asthenosphere structure beneath the subducting slab (at depths of 100-250 km) and its influence on the nucleation of giant megathrust earthquakes have not been well studied. Recently, Dr. FAN Jianke from the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) and Prof. ZHAO Dapeng from Tohoku University turned their attention to this problem by investigating the oceanic asthenosphere structure of six subduction zones where giant earthquakes have occurred.

Twitter lends name to new species of mite discovered in Japan

Apr 25, 2021 A team of Japanese and Austrian researchers has named a new mite species after Twitter following its discovery through photos posted on the social media platform by an amateur photographer visiting a fishing spot near Tokyo. The new species formally called Ameronothrus twitter was spotted after Satoshi Shimano, a professor who specializes in the study of mites at Hosei University, came across the tweeted photos by chance and then contacted the poster to find out where they were taken. Shimano said the find shows social media can “help speed up the time-consuming discovery of new species” and even “contribute to the development of science.”

Bridget Riley | Biography, Op Art, Paintings, & Facts

Riley spent her childhood in Cornwall and attended Goldsmiths College (1949–52; now part of the University of London) and the Royal College of Art (1952–55; B.A.). Until 1960 she painted primarily impressionistic landscapes and figures. Her study of the Pointillists, particularly Georges Seurat, led her to experiment with colour juxtaposition and optical effects, and under the influence of Victor Vasarely and others, her work took on a geometric abstraction, in which intricate patterns of black and white and, later, alternating colours were calculated to produce illusions of movement and topography. In 1965 she participated with Vasarely, Yaacov Agam, and others in a noteworthy international exhibition entitled “The Responsive Eye” at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. She won a first prize for painting at the Venice Biennale in 1968. Her notable works from this period included
