Progressive Club to hold monthly meeting

The Progressive Club of the Islands will hold its virtual monthly meeting on Feb. 18 at 4 p.m.
The guest speaker will be U.S. Rep. Van Demings, D-Orlando, who serves the 10th Congressional District. She will speak on the current challenges in Florida and America and the necessary actions that need to be undertaken.
Born in Jacksonville, Demings worked as a social worker, then joined the Orlando Police Department. Over a 27-year career, she served in many roles, including commander of the Airport Division during Sept. 11, commander of special operations, member of the Crisis Negotiation Team, commander of the Critical Incident Stress Management Team and executive vice president of the International Association of Airport and Seaport Police.

It will be months before every American who wants a vaccine can get one, according to a White House adviser. The CDC says COVID-19 could kill more than 500,000 people in the next month, and HHS raided millions of research dollars to use for unrelated expenses.

Biden COVID-19 adviser: It will be months before all who want vaccine get it
A White House COVID-19 adviser on Wednesday said that it will be months before all Americans who want a coronavirus vaccine can get one, a much more pessimistic message than the one delivered by President Biden.
It also features legislation hitching the federal increase in unemployment benefits to economic factors on the ground, thereby precluding the need for Congress to extend those benefits with new legislation down the road.

The $1.9 trillion relief proposal is designed to help American workers, businesses and state and local governments impacted by the virus, which has caused millions of job losses. A large chunk of the proposal is also devoted to supporting nationwide testing, a vaccine distribution plan and safe school reopening efforts.
Biden has run into resistance from Republicans as he pushes for the passage of the proposal in a Congress that is narrowly controlled by Democrats. The president has said he’d like to get bipartisan support for the package, but the White House has not ruled out using reconciliation to pass a bill with a slim majority.
