International body to release findings on human rights situation in the Philippines

MANILA – An international investigation body is set to submit its findings on the human rights situation in the Philippines.
This was announced during the global launch of the Independent International Commission of Investigation into human rights violations in the Philippines or Investigate PH on Jan. 28.
Peter Murphy, chairperson of the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) said during the online launch that the group will release two preliminary reports in time for the 46th and 47th UN Human Rights Council sessions in March and July 2021 respectively.

The Jan. 29, 2010, police killing of Aaron M. Campbell, an unarmed Black man shot in the back after officers arrived to check on his welfare, drew intense scrutiny in Portland, a grand jury rebuke, a march on City Hall and public condemnation from the Rev. Jesse Jackson.
On Wednesday, Campbell’s death garnered international attention.
Campbell’s mother, Marva Davis, and the family’s lawyer, Tom Steenson, had an hour to address an international commission delving into police violence against Blacks in the United States.
The
National Conference of Black Lawyers (NCBL), the International Association of Democratic Lawyers (IADL) and the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) have assembled a commission of experts from around the world to investigate racist police violence against people of African descent in the United States. The International Commission of Inquiry on Systemic Racist Police Violence Against People of African Descent in the United States will broadcast live hearings online with testimony from victims’ families and lawyers beginning January 18, 2021, which is the the day that the United States will commemorate the birthday of civil rights legend Martin Luther King, Jr. The hearings come to a close on February 6, 2021.
